Video Modelling (VM) is a video-based teaching method in which learners watch a recording of someone performing a target skill and then practice replicating it themselves.

It's grounded in social learning theory (Bandura, 1977), which holds that people learn effectively by observing others and imitating their behaviour.

There are three types of VM, distinguished mainly by whose perspective the video shows:

  1. Video modelling (VM), other (peer or adult): the learner watches someone else, a peer or adult, perform the skill.
  2. Video self-modelling (VSM): the learner watches a video of themselves successfully performing the skill.
  3. Point-of-view (POV): the video is filmed from the perspective of the person performing the skill, showing only what they would see while doing it.

At Topic Talk Co, we draw on this same principle by using carefully selected clips as the "model" that opens the door to reflection and conversation.
